There are a number of therapies that have been shown to be helpful for depression.
The 2009 UK clinical guideline on depression (CG90) from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence [NICE] does recommend a range of therapies, particularly for less severe depression, and states that CBT should be one of the therapies normally used, as it has the best evidence, but doesn’t suit everyone.
The guideline goes on to say that potential clients should be informed that there is ‘uncertainty of the effectiveness of counselling and psychodynamic therapy in treating depression’ (CG90 (2010 edition), P573).
These guidelines have been further developed to point more specifically towards certain forms of CBT being helpful for depression.
